Three things I learned from three rounds of survey enumerator training over the past few months:
- Memorize all enumerator names before the training begins. This might take a while, but it’s worth it. You can then cold call people by name. For my most recent round of enumerator training these past two days I did friendly cold-calling 2 or 3 times a minute. This had an extraordinary effect on concentration and attentiveness. Previously, I wasn’t super comfortable with peoples’ names, and thus wasn’t really able to cold call effectively.
- Bring candy. Distribute it to people who successfully answer difficult questions. This kept morale high for literally hours.
- Have group discussions about confusing concepts. It’s one thing for the trainer to explain something. It’s much better for one of the enumerators who gets it to explain the concept to the others, and then let others ask him/her questions. It might take longer and be a little chaotic, but the conversation helps people remember the concepts.
