Delta finally flies US-Liberia, price and scheduling not impressive

delta

After years of saying they would fly from the US to Liberia, then postponing the route, then making new promises, Delta has finally starting flying to Monrovia from Atlanta, via Ghana.  Excited about the possibility of an affordable winter break trip, I went on Delta.com.  To fly Boston-Atlanta-Accra-Monrovia, and back, on Delta in December, it costs $1,791.40.  Total roundtrip travel time is 65 hours.

The next cheapest way to do the trip would involve a combination of other airlines, including SN Brussels.  The cost would be $2,188.03.  Total roundtrip travel time: 46 hours.

So Delta is a bit cheaper (still crazy expensive) and a bit more inconvenient.  Not the panacea I was hoping for.

I can fly for $1585 from Atlanta in November – with United or Continental.

A post I accidentally deleted from Andrew (@mindnumbing):

Disappointing to be sure, but there can’t be much of a business case for Delta to have more frequent or less expensive flights to ROB, is there?

A quick look got me a $1630 from JFK to ROB via CMN, all on Royal Air Maroc with under 30 hours of travel one way. (Including time in CMN from 6:30am – 9:30pm). Cheaper and faster than the Delta flight at least.

My wife flew out on the first Delta flight on September 5th. Monrovia-Atlanta- Washington DC . Roundtrip fare $ 1503.00

So perhaps the bottom line is that more flights to Liberia is a good thing, but it will take more than Delta to bring fare to an affordable level.
