Anna Sussman has a radio piece on PRI about the US-run re-training and re-arming of Liberia’s military. She focuses on a fear that the new army could overthrow the current government, or mistreat Liberians. She seems to get the US Ambassador to admit that training and arms for the old AFL exacerbated abuses against civilians during the war. Sussman says the US trainers will leave in January.
This a good story, with the exception of one question she posed to a soldier: “Were there human rights violations in the old army?”
