Lately I’ve been thinking about why there is so much apathy among Liberians and Sierra Leoneans in their homes countries and the diaspora toward Charles Taylor’s trial. I’ve had conversations about this with lots of people. These conversations have highlighted three main reasons
- The “big fish” who were/are prosecuted by the Special Court are not the “big fish” for the average person. (i.e. The guy who raped my sister is not being prosecuted by the court.)
- Taylor’s trial is taking place on a different continent.
- Sierra Leoneans and Liberians are focused on moving on, surviving, and succeeding. The Taylor trial is not a priority.
I’m not sure these points can fully account for the apathy. I feel like I’m missing something. Thoughts?
