There always seemed to be construction going on in the communities near the road the leads to the airport, but the area seems to be growing even more rapidly these days. My sense is that this isn’t people rebuilding homes that were destroyed during the war, but rather developing a previously undeveloped area.

Hi Shelby,
I just love your blog. I’m a Liberian from Bomi County. Currently, I live outside Boston and have been here for 15 years. I haven’t been home to Liberia for quite awhile but is making plans to do so in 2009. It is great news that people are building homes along the RIA road. However, I keep hearing of makeshift houses and unplanned communities going up. Shouldn’t there be some planning in these undeveloped areas? At least this is a chance to make those areas better than Waterside. Also, land reform is needed along with laws to prevent people from squatting on the properties of others. Call me harsh but this is some of what I’ve heard. I also had to deal with the legal costs of getting people off my parent’s property. What is your view?
