Speech by new US Ambassador to Liberia

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, in Mauritania. Picture from here.
Below are excerpts from a speech the new US Ambassador to Liberia, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, recently gave. I can’t find a copy of the speech online, but if you would like a copy email me and I can forward it to you.
  • Liberia has the second largest USAID program in Africa, after Sudan. In a country with only three-and-a-half million people, that support has an enormous impact on the health and education of Liberia’s people and the improvement and reform of its government institutions.
  • Liberia is coming ever closer to qualifying for assistance under the Millennium Challenge Account, which could mean significant additional funding for development. We will soon break ground on a new Embassy compound, signaling our commitment to Liberia’s reconstruction.
  • In closing, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce my husband Lafayette Greenfield, a retired Foreign Service Officer, who I met here in Liberia and who enticed me nearly 30 years ago to pursue this career. My family has supported me throughout my 26 years in the United States Foreign Service.
