BET founder wants to portray new image of Liberia, builds helipad

Robert L. Johnson. Picture from here.

There’s an article in today’s Washington Post about a new $8 million 4-star hotel that soon will be opening about 20 miles north of Monrovia. The hotel was financed mostly by Robert L. Johnson, the billionaire founder of BET. The resort will have tennis courts that can be converted into a helipad in case of emergency.

Johnson says he wants the hotel to provide a new, positive image of Liberia, but I think the helipad sends mixed messages.

Johnson also offers this thought: “I believe passionately that African Americans have a responsibility to support Liberia much like Jewish Americans back Israel.”
