Land, murder, a former LURD spokesman, and a senator

Liberian Senator Roland Cooper Kaine. Picture from here.

At least 12 farmers (and most likely about 4 times that number) were shot and hacked to death and then thrown in a river near Kakata, a city about an hour outside Monrovia. This BBC article isn’t so clear, but the gist of it is that there was a conflict over ownership of land between an ex-rebel and a senator. Both say the property is theirs.

The ex-rebel is Charles Bennie, a former spokesman for Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD). Bennie now works at the Ministry of Commerce.

The senator, Roland Cooper Kaine, represents Margibi County. Kaine is a junior senator belonging to the Congress for Democratic Change, which is George Weah’s party.

Senator Kaine denies any knowledge of the attack, which occurred while Bennie’s workers were preparing the land for planting.

A land commission to handle the many on-going land disputes throughout the country has been in the works for a while. It looks like this incident might help bring the commission to fruition faster.
