A honeymoon at the Special Court

Former Sierra Leonean president Ahmed Tejan Kabbah, and his new wife Isata Kabbah, at their wedding a few days ago.

When a Sierra Leonean friend forwarded me a mass email this morning with 25 photos from the recent wedding of his country’s former president, Ahmed Tejan Kabbah, I clicked the adjacent star in my Gmail inbox. I hoped I would have an excuse to post one of the pictures on my blog, and now I do.

Kabbah cut his honeymoon short today to testify at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in Freetown. He was called to testify by the defense counsel for former RUF leader Issa Hassan Sesay.

According to a press officer at the Special Court in The Hague, Sesay’s defense team initially wanted Kabbah to testify with protective measures. When the judges rejected that request, the defense asked if he could testify by providing a written statement. The judges rejected that as well. Kabbah’s physical presence at the Special Court in Freetown today seems to be something of a last resort.

I leave you with this fun fact from the BBC: Kabbah’s new wife is about 40 years his junior.
