Cheese

I came home from work the other day and my apartment-mate handed me something square and cold. I looked down. It was a block of cheese. I thanked her for the thought, but kindly reminded her that I can’t eat cheese because animals sometimes have to be killed for the rennet, which gives the cheese its texture. Yes, I’m that cool of a vegetarian. She told me to look closely. Most of the print was in Greek, but in tiny letters I saw the phrase “non-animal rennet.” I almost cried. We went out to dinner that night. I brought the cheese and ate half of the block with pita bread. It was my first time eating cheese in over 6 months. It tasted so good.

So for all those vegetarians in Liberia, at the moment Abi Jaudi and Exclusive sell non-animal rennet cheese for US $5.

Being the curious person that I am, I of course had to look up rennet after I read your post. Wish I hadn’t. Yuck.
