I feel like every day squatters are getting kicked out of different places as land and property that was abandoned during the war is being reclaimed or purchased. A Libyan company (or is it the Libyan government?) that used to operate the Ducor Hotel is kicking out the squatters so that it can be renovated and turned into a hotel again. Apparently the property is owned by the Liberian government, but a Libyan company will be operating it. Am I getting this right?
All around town and especially on the road to the airport you can see buildings with yellow spray paint. There is usually an “X” followed by the letters MCC or MPW. (MCC=Monrovia City Corporation; MPW=Ministry of Public Works.) The “X” means the building or car or wall or whatever is going to be knocked down. As I understand things, if it is a fairly temporary structure, like a hut, then the MCC takes care of the demolishing. If it is more permanent, like a cement building, then the MPW will knock it down. Correct me if I’m getting any of this wrong, but I think this is the gist of it.
In the few months that I have been here many buildings on my road that have housed squatters are being reconstructed, meaning that all the people living there have had to move out. Where do these squatters go? Apparently to the cemetery. But now the cemetery is off-limits. BBC article here. Is this cemetery they talk about in the article the one on Center Street, or is this something else?
If you’ve connected the dots properly, it seems that the squatters moved to the cemetary and became criminals by living in the cemetary, since it is illegal to live in the cemetary. Sounds a lot like New York City!
