Rogues

I will preface this post by saying that I feel very safe in Liberia. Nothing significantly bad has happened to me since I’ve been here. I am not trying to perpetuate an image of a dangerous Liberia.

So, that being said, my apartment-mate Jen and I were hanging out with a friend the other night at our compound. I went to sleep around 1. Jen walked our friend out to see him off around 1:30 AM. As she was walking out, she saw one of our security guards holding a machete in one hand and a sling shot in the other.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

The security guard explained that he was protecting the compound from the “rogues” who have been throwing stones at the guards during the night and trying to scale our compound’s razor wire. I had no idea this had been going on. Very comforting.
